The BAI has a number of key areas of responsibility: licensing, compliance, development, research and information provision. The Commission also administers Sound & Vision, the Broadcasting Funding Scheme, which supports new television and radio programmes on Irish culture, heritage and experience. The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland was replaced in 2009 by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland. This new Authority will have responsibility for the regulation of all broadcasters licensed in the State and will ensure the provision of open and pluralistic broadcasting services.
